This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
