EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
